Calligraphy has been considered the ultimate form of art by the educated Chinese elites at least since the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). In subsequent dynasties, candidates for the public service entrance exams were scored and ranked on their calligraphy skills as well as their answers to questions.

A calligrapher is expected to demonstrate the strength of his personality through the use of a brush and ink.
