Appeared in the 16th century, the hanafuda is a card game typical of Japan. Created to circumvent the ban on using Western games, it was imported to the United States in the 1930s by Nintendo, originally founded to market it. A standard game pits two players (or even three) and is played in six or twelve innings for a total duration of about half an hour.
