About

Discover suminagashi, the Japanese art of floating ink, an ancient and poetic practice. Each creation begins with a few drops of sumi ink placed on the surface of water, then guided by natural or intentional movements, giving rise to unique forms that can never be reproduced.

Dating back to the late Heian period (12th century), suminagashi is surrounded by legends. It is said to have been passed on to Jiyaemon Hiroba by the Shinto deity Kasuga Myojin, in recognition of his devotion at a temple in Nara. Long kept confidential, this contemplative art is now opening up to everyone.
