About the film “Onna bakari no yoru”
Japan Impact invites you to discover two major works of classic Japanese cinema through screenings of films directed by Kinuyo Tanaka, an iconic figure of Japanese cinema, with the support of the Cinémathèque suisse (@cinemathequesuisse). 🎬
With Girls of the Night (Onna bakari no yoru, 1961), the Japan Impact audience will be immersed in postwar Japan, shaped by conservative laws and oppressive social scrutiny. Through the journey of Kuniko, a former prostitute seeking reintegration into society, Kinuyo Tanaka questions the place of women, imposed morality, and the weight of the male gaze, in a deeply human and committed narrative.
