Summary
Over 12,300 people flocked to EPFL for the 15th edition of Japan Impact!
For this anniversary edition, a retrospective museum and a talk hosted by former presidents of the PolyJapan association offered a different perspective and anecdotes on the history and evolution of our event.
The program shone with its diversity, notably featuring YouTuber Mitsu, international cosplayer Begoña, One Piece voice actor Vincent Chansard, and historian Sandrine Chabre. Musical performances were highlights, particularly with Natsumi Yuzu on shamisen, Hance with her captivating voice, and the rock concert by IRON ATTACK! and ButaOtome who energized Saturday evening’s show.
True to tradition, Japan Impact allowed its visitors to immerse themselves in Japanese culture with varied workshops and talks covering diverse topics such as yōkai, bento preparation, Konmari folding, shibari and much more. Martial arts were honored with demonstrations and introductions offered by several local dojos. This year, our rally themed around yōkai delighted young and old alike. Meanwhile, Nintendo and numerous video game associations transformed an entire floor into a gamer paradise, with the latest Switch releases and various video games. On their side, cosplay competitions shone with high-level performances and attracted crowds. The return of the Idol competition, inaugurated the previous edition, met with resounding success, while Japan Impact’s traditional animation, namely the Kawaii competition, was joyfully received by the audience during the event’s finale thanks to its talented participants. Finally, accessibility was a strong point of this edition, with the return of a quiet room, the introduction of pictograms facilitating inclusivity for people with specific needs, and other practical improvements.

Polymanga 2005: the origins of Japan Impact
Saturday, April 23, 2005, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 AM – Sunday, April 24, 2005, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Before Japan Impact, there was Polymanga. In 2005, the AGEPoly commission, PolyJapan, organized the very first major Swiss convention dedicated to manga, video games and Japanese culture on the EPFL campus. From this event would be born, a few years later, a convention specific to EPFL: Japan Impact.
Summary
Polymanga 2005 took place on the EPFL campus in Lausanne on April 23 and 24, 2005. It was the first major Swiss convention devoted to Japanese culture, manga, animation and video games. The event already attracted nearly 6,000 visitors, a significant success for a first edition organized entirely by student volunteers.
The program included cosplay competitions, anime screenings, video game tournaments, Japanese culture workshops (Japanese calligraphy, origami, tea ceremony) and karaoke for singing all night long (from 10 PM). The atmosphere was all about discovery, sharing and meeting between enthusiasts, laying the foundation for what would become the two French-speaking Swiss conventions in the following years.
After this inaugural edition, Polymanga left the EPFL campus to develop elsewhere in French-speaking Switzerland. PolyJapan, for its part, continued its activities within EPFL, and decided a few years later to create a new event focused on Japanese culture: Japan Impact, whose first edition took place in 2009.
This section is offered as a historical nod. Polymanga is no longer organized by PolyJapan today and has become an independent event, but its first edition in 2005 is part of Japan Impact’s DNA.
